Betty Cantrell steps down as Savvy Shield is crowned Miss America

During this Thursday's annual Miss America pageant, viewers said goodbye to Miss America 2016, Betty Cantrell, and said hello to Miss America 2017, Savvy Shields.

On September 11th, ABC broadcast the 96th annual Miss America pageant live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Savvy Shields was Miss Arkansas 2016 with a Platform Issue: Eat Better, Live Better. She impressed the judges with her talent: jazz dancing to “They Just Keep Moving The Line” from the American drama series, Smash.

Her answers to the interview questions also impressed, she was asked about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Her answer was "If you're trying to be leader of the free world, everything you say and do matters, and all of your actions are held to a higher standard," Shields said. "Both of the presidential nominees have done a good job, but they also need to watch what they're doing."

Savvy Shields will have appearances all over America for the next year as she lives the dream of being Miss America 2017.
