For the past few weeks, several clowns have been on Facebook making open threats to schools and other establishments, concerning many people. One such incident happened at Shades Valley High School in Irondale, Alabama, which is about 7 miles east of Birmingham, the school was locked down due to clowns threatening to show up. These clowns were posting things on Facebook that hinted that they might show up at the school. Another occurrence happened in Flomaton, Alabama, and, after a series of threatening posts on the “Flomo Clown” Facebook page, police took two juveniles and one adult to jail on Thursday, September 15th. The threats had even caused Flomaton police to order a “soft lockdown”. No clowns were found, but police got enough information to issue several warrants. Makayla Smith, the clowns’ leader was arrested and will likely be charged with making a terroristic threat.
Later on September 20th, a group of juveniles were found and identified to be the mastermind of two more clown Facebook pages. The Facebook pages, according to police, are in the process of being taken down. No charges have been currently filed against the juveniles, because there was not an actual terrorist threat made. The “clowns” never threatened a specific place or a specific person, so it could not be considered a true terrorist threat. What got the juveniles caught was when they dressed as clowns, got knives, and claimed “[they were] coming for you Troy, Alabama.” When interviewed the boys claimed the video was supposed to be taken as a joke, even though most people viewed it with terror. However charges are most like to be dropped against the juveniles, without any punishment.
