On September 22, the Purple Cat Press and yearbook staff went to Troy University for Journalism Day, or J Day. As you arrive at J Day you are greeted by Troy University students that are majoring in Journalism. The Troy University students volunteer to show the students around the campus for the day.

Schools from the majority of the southeast gathered in the Troy University ball room for the award ceremony. The Purple Cat Press won several awards including third place in writing quality, third place in layout and design, second place in coverage of school news, and second place in photography. Our yearbook won first in photography, third in theme and design, and second in use of typography. This is a huge accomplishment for Ariton as we are a 2A school competing against 5A and 6A schools.

After the awards ceremony, students attended three different workshops of their choice, each workshop lasting roughly 45 minutes. These classes were held by professors that worked at the university and taught skills used in yearbook, newspapers, and broadcasting.

“I learned a lot at J Day and I hope we get to go back next year.” Paige Dansby said.
